Background

Picture of girls in AsniJohn Wood, the founder of Room To Read, stayed at the Kasbah du Toubkal in 2004.

Room To Read’s mission is to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. It was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of ones own life. Their model also has a slant towards the education of girls on the basis that if you educate a girl you potentially educate a future generation as well.

We were hugely impressed with his achievements and it was obvious there was a considerable need for better education especially for girls in Morocco. Initially we tried to see if we could persuade Room To Read to enter Morocco but whilst they have started in Africa: 2006 S. Africa, 2007 Zambia, 2008 Ethiopia there is no current plan for Morocco. So with Room To Read’s blessing, we decided to get started ourselves. As you will see from the justgiving website, the funds go to Room To Read who will be passing them back to our Moroccan NGO, Education For All. Hence there are no overheads in running another British Charity as Room To Read is already registered there.
